There is a spoon
Michael handed us a spoon he had carved of bird's-eye maple given him by a friend (at USD 80 a foot he isn't going to buy much himself). And he read us the following homily:

"You are holding a spoon. A spoon like this belongs in a kitchen, the place where batter is beaten, soup stirred, sauces invented. Your kitchen. You may or may not be a great cook but your kitchen is the heart of your home. It's the place of nourishment and this spoon reminds you of the nourishment whipped up in your kitchen. And in your lives.

Marriage is all about providing nourishment. If you want a great marriage then you need to be a serious cook. As long as you can provide each other with nourishment of all sorts, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, physical, then your marriage will thrive. Let this spoon remind you of that.

Sometimes the cupboard might seem pretty bare and sometimes you might be tempted to feast to the point of gluttony. Just keep in mind that hard times pass and the spoon holds only a measured amount.

Love is a wonderful feeling that no one is able to define. Love does provide nourishment but marriage must be a meal of many courses. Diversity and novelty provides a healthier diet and a more interesting marriage. Don't rely on love to conquer all.

The spoon can give you a sense of contentment and security. That's because you know it belongs in the kitchen providing nourishment. But it's really only just a stick of wood. Likewise, your marriage can give you a sense of contentment and security but it's really only just a piece of paper. You will live and grow and prosper together insofar as you are able to provide each other with nourishment."
