Michael went home and we wandered around the park a bit dazed from the
shock and champagne. We climbed a lookout tower to see if we wanted to eat
our lunch there. (We didn't.) Before we climbed down again Joshua came up
to join us. I asked him if he was from around here, if he knew if that was
an amphitheatre down there. (No, sorry, he was from Cape Cod.) Mare blurted
out that we'd just gotten married half an hour ago. Once we'd convinced
Joshua it was true ("I'm a very gullible person. Are you just messing with
my brain?") he was so delighted he reached into his backpack and fished out
an amber egg and presented it to us. Our first wedding present. It's very
pretty in the sun, and it's nice and light for carrying around, but just
like the three toasters newlyweds are traditionally left to cope with we
don't know what to do with it. Make a little shrine for it and worship the
object as our first wedding present? Throw out something that was given us
with such simple joy?
