We'd picked a walk on the Long Trail which crosses Vermont from north to
south. It was 3.4 miles (5.4 km) to a shelter (although we were going to camp) at a lake on a mountaintop
and the same distance down again another side and back to where we
started. We drove to the trailhead, put on our backpacks and went to log
ourselves in a register. This was the sign we saw, which was a bit daunting
considering that it was already 4:00 in the afternoon and I am not an
experienced hiker. I am not particularly strong, or flexible, or light on
my feet, or sure of my balance. I plod along, tortoise-like. And (I imagine
also like the tortoise, though I can't ask) I enjoy myself.
