Mare told me later that he used to hate backpacking. He's a European, and in
Europe anything that is fit for cultivation or building is cultivated or
built up. What's left is mountains and cliffs. People who want to go walk
in the wilderness should go to the mountains. But then some of them (including Mare) become climbers and have to carry heavy gear; backpacking is
the necessary evil of lugging the gear close enough to the mountain to
climb it. But he allows as he likes the kind of gearless backpacking we do
in the New World backcountry.
