We resisted the temptation to be patronising. These were people who had
chosen a short day-hike, but they were walking straight up the mountainside
with no break. We had climbed 500m the previous day over the course of
about four hours. From this side of the mountain however, they were
climbing about 300m in one hour. They had every right to gasp. Instead, we
encouraged them each in our own way: Mare would tell them it was not far,
only half an hour. I would tell them it was a good forty-five minutes more,
that they should pause often to enjoy the view and the open air.
